How Go works

  1. Black and White take turns placing one stone on an empty intersection.
  2. Stones that lose all their liberties (empty neighbouring points) are captured.
  3. When both players pass, mark any dead stones; each side scores its stones plus the empty area it surrounds. White adds 7.5 komi.

Go questions, answered

What is Go?

Go is a two-player strategy board game that began in China over 2,500 years ago (weiqi in Chinese, baduk in Korean, igo in Japanese). Black and White take turns placing stones on the intersections of a grid, trying to surround more of the board than their opponent.

How do you win at Go?

When both players pass, each side scores one point for every stone on the board and every empty point it surrounds (area scoring). White adds 7.5 points of komi for moving second. The higher score wins, or a player can resign earlier.

How do captures and ko work?

A stone or connected group with no empty neighbouring points (liberties) is captured and removed. You can't play a move that leaves your own stones with no liberties, and the ko rule forbids recreating an earlier board position, so a stone can't be retaken straight back.

Can I play Go online with a friend for free?

Yes. Create a room on a 9×9, 13×13 or 19×19 board, then share the invite link or six-character code. Anyone else who opens the link can watch. No download or account is needed.

Can I play Go against the computer?

Yes. Pebble, the built-in bot, plays at a beginner level. It's a friendly way to learn the rules, especially on the 9×9 board.

Which board size should beginners start with?

Start on 9×9: games take about 10 minutes and captures happen quickly. Move to 13×13 and the full 19×19 board once surrounding territory feels natural.
